Celebrating our culture, our heritage and our commitment to sustainability.

Our Story - Ko wai matou?

Kia ora!

After three years of thought, lockdowns, developing ideas, research and learning, ‘In the Ngahere’ was established in 2021 by Charlie (Niuean and English) and Catherine (Ngatiwai, Nga Puhi, Ngati Hine, Ngati Pakeha). The name ‘In the Ngahere’ came about because of their love of design; wooden craft and paper products, it reflects their connection to their products and embeds their responsibility as a business to kaitiakitanga (guardianship).  As designers, they are aware of the lifecycle of their products, and what they make must someday be able to return to Papatuanuku (earth mother) with minimum impact.

Founders Charlie and Catherine have fused their complimentary skills and gifts to create ‘In the Ngahere’, a business they love.

‘In the Ngahere’ is a unique creative store that offers a beautiful greeting card range celebrating Māori and Pasifika design. 'In the Ngahere’ also creates finely crafted contemporary wooden products. They try to source as much recycled wood as possible from construction sites.

As partners, Charlie and Catherine bring together a high level of technical, cultural and design expertise. They are passionate about making pieces that are memorable, meaningful and sustainable.

Noho ora mai.
